Artweeks İstanbul: Collectors
The ‘Collectors’ edition, open to the public from 17 September to 8 November 2026, brings together the long-standing private collections of Banu & Hakan Çarmıklı, Öner Kocabeyoğlu, and Tansa Mermerci in the historic setting of Akaretler Sıraevler, a free public space outside the museum, under the vision of Bilgili Sanat and with Kalebodur as the main sponsor.

Epipe is the culmination of an oral history and archival research project that Güneş Terkol has been working on with her mother, Elmira Terkol, since 2002. The artist weaves together earlier and newly produced works with materials distilled from this research, which traces the multi-stage migration of the Kazan Tatars beginning in the late 19th century, from Russia to China and eventually to Türkiye. Combining drawing, animation, and stitching, she develops a layered audio-visual narrative around migration routes, family recollections, and exchanges across geographies and generations.

What is home? A place, a landscape, a smell, or familiar music? Since the recruitment agreement of the 1960s, migration and cultural interconnections have had a significant impact on the relationship between Germany and Turkey. In Ahlen, Westphalia, many people sought work and a new life at the Westfalen coal mine – what was intended to be a temporary departure often turned into an attempt to find a permanent home in a foreign culture.

Istanbul Depo presents The Past is Present by the Memory Museum for Historical Justice, Turkey’s first digital museum and human rights archive. The Past is Present is the most comprehensive exhibition on the 1980 Coup d’État to date.

Povzı Recipe
Artist Güneş Terkol and her mother Elmira Terkol are talking about Elmira’s journey from China to Istanbul along with a povzı recipe in the artist’s kitchen. Povzı, a type of dumpling they make with their heirloom kitchenware from China, contains stories about food and memory that has been passed down from generation to generation.

Güneş Terkol and Güçlü Öztekin are founding members of the HaZaVuZu collective in Istanbul, working across music, video, performance, and design. Terkol produces sewn works, videos, sketches, and musical compositions to – often humorously – consider gender relations. Öztekin makes large-scale drawings and paintings on paper that he describes as a form of ‘recycling’. For the biennial, Terkol and Öztekin built a space that serves as a meeting point for visitors and artists.

The exhibition featured works that explore the relationship between humans and cities, nature, and between themselves and their physical environment in historical, social, and personal contexts. Moreover, the exhibition held a mirror to how human emotions are influenced by the new visual and aural stimuli that have emerged in the world today.
